My friend, who I’ll call Lola (21F), and I (22F) have known each other since elementary school. We practically grew up together. Through school, family drama, and everything else life threw at us, we stayed close. We talked almost every day, and I honestly believed we’d always be friends.
That’s why this situation has been so difficult for me.
I’ve been dating my boyfriend (24M) for a little over a year now, and this is the most serious relationship I’ve ever had. He’s currently in medical school, so money is tight, but he’s kind, hardworking, and treats me with love and respect. I’ve always felt lucky to have him.
The problems started almost as soon as Lola met him.
Instead of being happy for me, she immediately criticized his appearance and told me I could do better. At first, I brushed it off as a friend being overly protective. Then she started complaining that he wasn’t treating me properly because we split the bill at expensive restaurants. Since he’s paying his way through medical school, we’ve always agreed that sharing expenses makes sense for us. It never bothered me, but Lola acted like it was proof that he didn’t value me.
After hearing those comments over and over, I finally told her they were disrespectful and asked her to stop. She apologized, and I genuinely believed we had moved past it.
Unfortunately, things only got worse.
My boyfriend is Black, and I’m White. Lola is also Black, and she started making our relationship the subject of constant jokes.
She’d bring up how people like us wouldn’t have been allowed to marry decades ago. Then she’d joke about him “tainting his bloodline.” Every time she’d laugh afterward and insist she was kidding, but both my boyfriend and I felt increasingly uncomfortable whenever she was around.
I kept wondering if I was being overly sensitive or if I simply wasn’t understanding the humor, so I didn’t immediately make a big issue out of it.
Then, a few weeks ago, I sent her a photo of my boyfriend and me during a date night.
Instead of saying anything nice, she replied with a joke about cotton picking.
I stared at my phone for several minutes, completely shocked.
That was the moment I realized this wasn’t harmless teasing anymore.
It wasn’t one joke.
It wasn’t one bad day.
It had become a pattern of insulting my relationship, mocking my boyfriend, and making racially charged comments every chance she got.
I finally told her I couldn’t continue being friends with someone who repeatedly disrespected the person I love after I’d already asked her to stop.
She didn’t take it well.
She accused me of throwing away a lifelong friendship over a man and said I’d started revolving my entire life around my relationship. She also told me I couldn’t take a joke anymore and was being overly dramatic.
Now I’m questioning myself.
I miss our conversations.
I miss having my best friend to text about random things during the day.
Part of me wonders whether I acted too quickly.
But another part of me keeps thinking that if someone repeatedly insults your partner, ignores your boundaries, and continues making offensive jokes after you’ve clearly said they make you uncomfortable, maybe that’s no longer friendship at all.
I never wanted to choose between my boyfriend and one of my oldest friends.
I simply wanted the person I’d known for years to respect my relationship the same way I respected her choices.
Instead, I reached a point where every conversation seemed to include another comment, another insult, or another “joke” that didn’t feel funny to anyone except her.
Now I’m left wondering whether ending the friendship was the right decision, or whether I really did overreact by walking away from someone who’s been part of my life for so long.
AITAH for ending our friendship because she refused to stop mocking my relationship and my boyfriend?
